Road to Reading

ROAD TO READING

Heart of Indiana United Way, in partnership with Ivy Tech Community College and with support from the Shafer Foundation, is proud to announce the launch of Road to Reading—a new summer literacy initiative that brings books and learning directly to families in the community.

What is Road to Reading?

Road to Reading launched this summer with  4 community based events in Muncie.  Road to Reading offers families the opportunity to “shop” together for free books and literacy resources from a fully stocked Ivy Tech RV. Road to Reading is about creating joyful, engaging opportunities for families to build literacy-rich memories together.

Why is it important?

Access to books is vital for children’s academic success and overall development. Research shows that students who read regularly over the summer months are better equipped to maintain their reading skills and perform well academically when they return to school in the fall. By empowering students to choose books they’re interested in, we aim to cultivate a lifelong love for reading and support their educational journey.

How can you get involved?

We need your help to make these events successful! We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to assist students in selecting their books during family nights at each school and the next school day to ensure students who didn’t go to family night still have the ability to choose books. Volunteers are also need to help set up and sort books before the event starts. Your support will make a difference in the lives of countless children in our community.
