One Hundred Years of Service, Powered by Volunteers

Heart of Indiana United Way is celebrating 100 years of service—and from the very beginning, volunteers have been the heartbeat of our work. To honor this milestone, we’ve dedicated an entire year to volunteer opportunities across the five counties we serve, including right here in Madison County.

Thanks to Duke Energy, presenting sponsor of our Volunteers in Action series (running through June 2026), residents, businesses, and organizations have more ways than ever to make a meaningful difference for their neighbors.

In Madison County, volunteers are already making an impact. Through Read United at Anderson Community Schools, community members sit alongside children, helping them reach grade-level reading by third grade—a critical milestone when kids shift from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” Every time a volunteer shows up, they help boost skills, confidence, and opportunity.

Workplace partners are also fueling this year of service. Old National Bank employees recently packed Talking is Teaching kits to help families turn everyday moments into opportunities to talk, read, and sing with their babies—sparking brain development and laying the foundation for lifelong learning. In August, NTN painted a sensory path for young learners to enjoy. And in the next few weeks, area employers will rally volunteers for Operation Weatherization, packing do-it-yourself kits to help low-income families cut energy costs and stay warm through the winter.

While Madison County hosts anniversary volunteer projects throughout the year, Henry County will have its annual single day of volunteer service on October 3. All efforts provide neighbors with opportunities to work together, give back, and see the results of their service firsthand.

These occasions remind us that volunteerism isn’t just about completing projects. They are about building stronger, more connected communities. When people step forward to share their time and talents, they support children and families, uplift nonprofits, and strengthen the very fabric of Madison County.

For 100 years, Heart of Indiana United Way has been rooted in service. With your help, we’ll carry that spirit forward for the next century. To find ways to volunteer or to support our work, visit heartofindiana.org and click “Volunteer,” or call 765-288-5586.

Together, we can make Madison County stronger—for today, tomorrow, and the next 100 years.
