Recent uncertainty around SNAP benefits raised real concern for families across Madison County. For many households, even a temporary disruption in assistance isn’t minor inconvenience. It means empty cabinets, missing bills, or going without gas to get to work.
At Heart of Indiana United Way, we hear daily from local organizations serving people facing hunger, rising costs, and unstable housing. This fall, our Social Service Organizational Capacity Survey showed just how strained the local network has become.
Across our region— Madison, Delaware, Henry, Randolph, and Fayette counties—67% of organizations said demand exceeded their capacity in the past six months. Madison County providers reported the same trend: record-high pantry visits, decreased food donations, volunteer shortages, and uncertainty about future funding. As one local provider put it, “We’re purchasing more food than ever, and it’s not sustainable.”
This mirrors what data tells us about those who are Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained, and Employed: more than half of Madison County households can’t afford the basics, even when working multiple jobs. When food prices rise faster than wages, families face choices that no one should have to make—groceries or rent, medication or gas.
And the need extends well beyond SNAP. In our five-county region, 58,370 people face food insecurity, while only 40,805 receive SNAP—creating a significant meal gap. But the gap represents more than missed meals; it reflects thousands of families earning too much to qualify for help, yet not enough to afford the basics across every part of their household budget.
Heart of Indiana United Way strengthens the very organizations that told us they’re stretched too thin—and helps close the gaps in meals, stability, and essential supports for families who cannot wait on policy decisions or funding cycles.
