Connecting Our Community to Care: Covering Kids & Families on the Go

Helping Families Get Covered

Our Covering Kids & Families (CKF) navigators were out in full force—meeting families, answering questions, and helping individuals take the next step toward better health.

United is the way we meet people where they are. Our Covering Kids & Families (CKF) navigators have been out in the community, connecting with families and individuals at the New Castle-Henry County Public Library Nonprofit Community Fair and the Life Skills Resource Fair at the New Castle Fieldhouse. These events created space for real conversations—about health, about barriers, and about the opportunities that come with having access to care.

Throughout the evening, our navigators met with parents, workers, seniors, and young adults—each with unique questions and concerns. Some were navigating changes to state-funded health insurance. Others weren’t sure where to start. Many simply needed someone to listen and walk them through their options. That’s exactly what CKF navigators are here to do: provide trusted, one-on-one support that helps people feel confident in their next steps in getting and keeping health insurance.

As CKF Navigator Mary Nicholson-Tait shared,
“I love being able to get out in the community and letting them know how we can help. With so many changes that folks are hearing about state funded health insurance, people have questions. I am happy to help provide some clarity and reassurance for those who need it.”

That sense of clarity and reassurance is critical. Health coverage can be confusing, especially during times of change—but it’s also one of the most important tools individuals and families have to protect their well-being. When people understand their options and have support through the process, they’re far more likely to enroll, access care, and stay covered.

At the core of this work is a simple but powerful message: Get It. Use It. Keep It.

Get It.
Having health coverage is the first step. CKF navigators help individuals and families explore their eligibility, complete applications, and enroll in coverage that fits their needs. By removing barriers and simplifying the process, more people can access the care they deserve.

Use It.
Coverage only makes a difference if it’s used. Preventative care, regular check-ups, and early treatment all play a role in improving long-term health outcomes. Insured children are more likely to receive timely care, helping identify and treat health concerns early—before they become bigger challenges.

Keep It.
Life changes, and coverage can too. CKF navigators help families understand renewal requirements, report changes, and stay continuously covered so they don’t experience gaps in care.

The impact of this work reaches far beyond individual households. Children with consistent access to health care are more likely to attend school regularly, stay engaged in learning, and graduate prepared for the future. Fewer absences mean stronger academic outcomes, and a healthy start sets the foundation for lifelong success.

For adults, the benefits are equally significant. Health coverage provides protection from high medical costs, reducing financial stress and increasing stability. It also means fewer missed days of work and a better overall quality of life. With access to free preventative health and wellness checks, adults can take a proactive approach to their health—catching potential issues early and staying healthier longer.

And when individuals are healthy, the entire community benefits. Employers have a more reliable workforce. Schools see improved attendance and performance. Families experience greater stability. Healthier communities are stronger, more connected, and better positioned to thrive.

Events like these fairs are a critical part of making those outcomes possible. They bring resources directly to the community, break down barriers to access, and create opportunities for meaningful engagement. Every question answered, every concern addressed, and every person connected to coverage represents progress.

While these events may only last a few hours, their impact lasts much longer. A conversation at a resource fair can lead to a doctor’s visit that prevents a serious illness. It can mean a child gets the care they need to stay in school. It can provide peace of mind for a parent or stability for a working adult.

Our Covering Kids & Families navigators are committed to continuing this work—showing up, building trust, and helping individuals and families navigate their health coverage with confidence.

Because when people have access to care, they don’t just get healthier—they build stronger futures.
