Every child deserves the joy of books\, and this event helps provide free books to children every month\, fostering a love of reading from the very start.\nFor $31.20\, a child in our five-county region can receive a new book each month for a year through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.\nThe State of Indiana previously covered half the cost\, with Heart of Indiana United Way funding the rest. While DPIL was removed from the state’s last budget\, a public/private partnership initiative led by Indiana’s First Lady has extended that match through the end of 2026. This effort has been vital to keeping books coming to children across the state. However\, funding beyond 2026 remains uncertain—and even with the current match\, local organizations like ours must continue to raise substantial funds each year to meet our share of the cost as enrollment grows.\nHow it worksForget traditional bingo-this is bingo with a beat! The RV will make stops at four community events throughout the summer in Muncie Promise Neighborhoods\, creating joyful\, engaging opportunities for families to build literacy-rich memories together. \nSummer 2025 Heart of Indiana United Way Road to Reading Event Schedule: \n\nMay 29: Avondale Church – End of School Year Celebration starting at 4 pm\nJune 14: Juneteenth Celebration – McCulloch Park  from 2 – 9 pm\nJuly 12: Connection Corner Birthday Bash – from 12 – 2 pm\nJuly 21: Industry Neighborhood Cookout – from 6 – 8:30 pm\n\n“Road to Reading is more than a mobile book giveaway—it’s a way for families to come together around reading and learning\,” said Jenni Marsh\, President & CEO of Heart of Indiana United Way. “By meeting families where they are and making literacy resources fun and accessible\, we’re helping children stay on track while school is out—and strengthening connections that support success year-round.” \nEach Road to Reading event is intentionally held in a Promise Neighborhood\, areas where children face some of the greatest barriers to educational success. Through this initiative\, families will have access not only to high-quality children’s books\, but also adult reading materials and community resources provided by partners from the Cradle to Career Network\, Muncie Community Schools\, and other out-of-school-time programs. \n“The Road to Reading initiative is a powerful example of how we can come together as a community to support literacy\, learning\, and opportunity for all.
